Delta unisaw fence upgrade

These contractor saws have a 2 hp motor when connected to 220-240 volts, but the special design of the motor limits the hp on 120 volts to 1.5 hp so it can be run on a 15 or 20 amp 120 volt circuit. I picked up a 34-444 for my son, cleaned and calibrated it, and it's every bit as accurate as my mid 1980's Unisaw with 52' Unifence. They increased the model number by one digit each year, but didn't change their design much, if any, from year to year. The Delta 34-4_ saws are all about the same. Good clean ones are listing for $3-400 around here complete with fence, miter gauge, motor, etc. If you want a better contractor style table saw at a very reasonable price, keep a lookout for a Delta Contractor Saw. Make two and you will have a double sided fence that doesn't warp or flex, but you will still be limited by the fence clamps to the rails, so much better, but not perfect. Make it taller than the fence and you will have room to clamp feather boards to it. A piece of 12 mm Baltic Birch bolted to the side of your metal fence should make a big difference, and it is easy to do.
